President’s Corner
By John MacMartin, Minot Chamber President

Now that the Legislative Session is wrapping up, Minot has had some victories per se. The Chamber has been a part of a collaborative team working to see that military spouse employment, military retiree pay is exempt from state income tax, and telemedicine for access to necessary behavioral treatment not offered in ND is approved. As Minot Area Chamber of Commerce president, I was pleased to take a group of people to Bismarck to work for these issues and achieved success on all three. We also worked to support the Commerce Department budget for base retention money. Our committee, Task Force 21, works hard to recognize that MAFB is a vital part of our community and economy; this takes additional dollars from the state along with dollars raised locally.

I continue to work with the Steering Committee which was established as an outcome of the International Economic Development Council report to bring forward a One Brand Marketing concept that would include MADC and Visit Minot.  The group has approached the MAGIC Fund for money to accomplish this.

The Chamber continues to promote Minot through our Maximize Minot campaign. This effort urges everyone to think before you buy online. Can you get it locally? Will this impact my community?  This isn’t only an effort to buy local, but to invest local and hire local. Hire local means to use the professional services here in Minot. This affects our economy, our workforce, our tax base, and so much more.
