Chamber tracks legislative issues
The Minot Area Chamber of Commerce is keeping a close eye on what’s happening in Bismarck this Legislative session. Chamber President John MacMartin has made the trip to the Capitol city three times so far. He has testified on HB 1009 dealing with funding for premiums for 4-H, FFA and open class exhibits for the North Dakota State Fair. MacMartin let the Legislative Committee know the importance of the money for the backbone of the Fair: agriculture. The agriculture and livestock producers who attend the Fair are the future of the state’s number one industry.

MacMartin also testified on SB 2126 on military spouse licensure. This bill would essentially allow the licensure of spouses of military members to be able to use their occupational license from state to state. There were strong headwinds as witnessed by the negative testimony from most occupational groups. SB 2127 is similar and had a similar hearing. The Chamber hopes that SB 2306, over which the senators and the occupational groups are negotiating, will be a vehicle in which we can help our military neighbors.

He also testified on behalf of the Chamber and MAFB in support of SB 2173. This bill that would make it possible for medical providers located out of state in conjunction with a provider in state to provide diagnosis and recommended treatment of behavioral disorders. The state has few, if any, physicians that possess the credentials to provide the assistance necessary.

The Chamber will continue to keep you up to date on what’s happening in Bismarck and you can attend the Legislative Forums sponsored by the Minot Area Chamber of Commerce.
